Hi,
I am wondering if someone can help. I am a carer for someone suffering severe mental health problems. Fortunately they are slowly on the mend due to taking medication, however one large situation we have to deal with is the amount of debt that has built up in their name.
I am hoping if someone can give me some pathway in how the person can tackle the debt with support from myself (carer), support worker, consultant. As far as I know it is as follows.
1. Create a budget sheet showing incoming and outgoings, so at least there is a birds eye view of where the debt has built up.
2. The mental health professional may wish to do a capacity assessment on the caree to see how much support is needed.
3. Contact debtors regarding the situation
4. See if debts can be consolidated or written off.
Would this be a good plan, or am I missing something here?
If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks

There's a section on here about mental health and debt:

It would also be worth posting on the debt free wannabe board for advice.
Don't try and consolidate debt, it usually just makes things worse.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0
