This little problem came to an unexpected conclusion - I happened to find someone on Gumtree locally selling a full retail copy of Windows 7 Home Premium for £20, still in its cellophane from Curry's. I did a clean install on the Vista laptop and it's currently downloading 800MB of Windows Updates...
