Anyone Hired a VW Camper?

I'm thinking of hiring a VW camper for a weekend break in October and wondered if anyone had rented one before and could recommend a company.

Thanks

  • I haven't used the company, but I'm going to Glastonbury with some friends next summer, and we're thinking about renting one from this site:

There may well be better out there!

  • Haven't hired one, but owned three like that in the eighties! One plus is that they are easy to drive and are no wider or longer than a Mondeo so easy to park (except in some low ceiling multi-storey car parks!

Think hard about what you think you'd get out of it that you can't do another way (a decent tent for example - they were very expensive in the 80s but much cheaper now and much easier to erect). If you do decide you want to hire a VW then don't expect more than 30mpg if you hire an original petrol engined one.

Second, VW campervans are very small compared to later designs, with very basic facilities and limited storgage space. They can be cold too if the weather turns and you don't have a decent ancillary heater, especially with the roof up. Cosy for two under the duvet but no room for anyone else really.

The bigger engined ones can cruise at 75 or even 80, but the 1600cc ones struggle to cruise at 70, so allow plenty of time on the motorway.

Security can be a problem unless they have upgraded it for the new millennium ... these old VWs are easy targets for thieves for stealing your belongings.

Having said all that, we had some fun times in ours when we were younger. Thesedays we have a 7 metre long Fiat with an economic diesel engine that cruises well on the motorway despite weighing at least twice as much as a VW, but it's a pain to park!
