Jumping the gun a little but if it gets to the face to face assessment stage is it permissible to record the interview using a voice recorder or something similar ?

You can record it but you have to tell them in advance and it has to be on two tapes or two CDs so that you can give them a copy at the end. You can't use a digital voice recorder.

If you want to record it without them knowing you are free to do so. It's not against the law and whether the recording would be admissible at any tribunal is up to the judge not dwp.

I covertly recorded everything to do with dwp and the recordings have been very useful when sent to my MP. If the dwp or its employees or contractors see you recording they will ask you to stop and/or stop the assessment.

If you want to record, with dwp or any of its contractors knowing about it, you will have to inform them well in advance and use their tape or cd - not digital - recorders, don't go to the expense of buying something you might not ever use again.

For ESA you can use their recorders. For PIP you have to provide your own equipment. I've not heard of them agreeing to record it for PIP using their own equipment. There may be exceptions to that but I wouldn't rely on it. If you hope for them to use their equipment I'd suggest checking in advance and getting an email or written confirmation. Even then, if you get there and the recording equipment isn't available it won't be accepted as a reason not to continue.
