i need a wee runaround

ATM we have a baby Beamer and a mr2

I'm now thinking the mr2 has to go ( lovely in the summer but a !!!!! in the winter)

I'm looking a diesel, up to £3k , preferably £2k

Five doors, not an estate. Decent boot

Low road tax, the car will only be used once or twice a week. Long motorway runs

Also, what is high mileage for a diesel?

Suggestions please :)

High mileage for a diesel will depend on what diesel, Get an old Mercedes 300 and 500k+ miles will be acceptable. Get a renault and 120k maybe where i would say pick something else.

Why the obsession with low road tax? I bet i can get you a better deal on a car with a £200+ a year road tax compared to one with a sub £100 tax.

The overall running costs for the year could be less paying the higher road tax.

Ford Fiesta, Focus or a Mondeo which you may think expensive to run over the 2 smaller ones but they are cheaper to buy and running cost differences are neglible.

A weeks holiday recently averaged 54mpg in my Mondeo estate. It was close to 60mpg on the journey there and back but the shorter journeys during the week dropped it down.

I would normally default and say any 1.9tdi VAG engined manual car - Golf or Octavia but having just got into a '08 Civic 2.2 diesel, I will now say 8th gen Civic. Big boot, even bigger when the seats are folded down flat.....you also have a centre storage space by folding the rear seat bottoms up !

Just budget £1000 for a clutch if the need arises or buy one with that already done. Mine is on 140,000 and drives very well.

High mileage for a diesel is 250,000-300,000.

+1 for the civic, i just traded mine simply because we needed a bigger car (got an S-Max).

It had done £140, 000, I had the clutch and flywheel replaced in Feb for £700.

The 2.2 diesel has a lot of torque, great and really comfy on the motorway, good fun on A Roads.
plenty of room inside, could sit a 6 foot plus person behind my drivers seat (I am 6 foot 2)

decent boot size (biggest of all hatches - Golf, Focus etc) not sure how it compares to mondeo or octavia boots. magic seats are really useful!
