Second degree in medicine

Options
Hi there,

I have a first degree; a BA in Creative Writing which I have just graduated from. However, I am looking at doing a second degree, in Medicine (always been my dream and more achievable now I have a BA)
The only hurdle is that in whatever way I do this, the tuition fees for first few years isn't funded by the NHS - which is fine.
However I know that Student Loans don't go to you if you already have a first degree. I am of low income as yet, but looking at going for degree in 2018 if possible.

Does anyone know if I am still in low income I would get help for this degree? Or be able to post me in the right direction of someone who does know?

Thanks!

I can't see that having a first degree in Creative Writing is going to be of much help in getting you a place to study Medicine - I'd prefer my doctor to know about biology rather than be able to write me a nice short story. I suspect if you are accepted on a course you are going to need many thousands of pounds to pay fees and living expenses for some or all of the duration of the training, so perhaps you should spend some time saving up before you think about applying.

Do you have any science subjects in your qualifications? Normally a science subject (chemistry, biology, physics, Maths) is required.

Check out the website of the university you are interested in attending. That should give information on the entry requirements and funding available.
  • You will need the alevels to get in. Maths Chemistry Bio. Preferable A*AA at least to give yourself a chance. Your first degree won't really help.

Funding will also be tricky no more student loans. Its likely you will have to fund the undergrad yourself

There are alternative entry qualifications such as Access courses to Medicine but that would take at least a year and need to be funded. What qualifications do you currently have?

Are you sure that having a degree in creative writing is going to help?
I am assuming you meet the academic criteria for acceptance to medical school, which is usually A-level, or equivalent in A (possibly B at a push) in science subjects such as Chemistry, Biology.

Also a lot of medical schools require this first degree to be in at a 2:1 at least and in a health related subject, and also the candidate to have health related work/voluntary experience

Have a look at this for a start.
