A J Bell website not working

I can login but then I get the message:

'We are unable to process your request at this moment. Please try again or call us on 0345 373 3479 for more information'

Considering their recent huge price hike, I was hoping for a better service than this.

Anyone else experiencing problems?

Yes; it's quite common for their site to be down at weekends I find.

One more reason to transfer if you have been affected by a large price increase. My ISA is already in iWeb with the dealing account still to go, first year savings ~£300 due to opening fee and transfer out fees, second year savings on the way to £900.

No. I must admit I had assumed that it wouldn't work on a Sunday.

I'd be interested to hear how any ex-A J Bellers are getting on if they've changed platforms. It's something I'm intending to do, but I haven't identified a suitable alternative for my SIPP yet.

Systems cannot run 24/7 without occasional maintenance.

I think you are mixing up service and system. A properly disingenuous system can provide 24/7 service. You just need to be able to cut over seamlessly to a service that has been maintained.

Take for example a nuclear power station, or the ISS. Can you imagine someone saying, sorry, but we' re taking your life support system down for the weekend........!

    Cheers fj

Doesn't fit in with my use of the word. Typo?

But nuclear power stations do have regular maintenance when they are offline - normally in the summer months.

ISS is somewhat different but that will tend to have total redundancy so that it can run on backup systems while the prime systems are under maintenance. I suspect that the A J Bell systems don't cost as much and are subject to both software and hardware failures that will bring the service down occasionally.

I would imagine that their aim will be to provide the prime dealing systems up always during trading hours, the rest are less important but will hit their street cred if failures are common.

I use youinvest and I don't think I have ever noticed any offline periods?

Difficlut to say because depends on so many personal variables. My low value one is still with Fidelity (% based ones are not too bad if you can only put in £3600 a year because already drawing a private pension and linking with my partner gets me 0.2%). If you have hundreds of thousands and want drawdown for example then fixed cost ones comparing the running charges are the thing, start with Alliance Trust or Interactive Investor (but II has a long thread here about poor customer service, don't know if it's improved recently) for comparisons.

Thanks - yes, I am looking for a fixed fee platform. I did dip into the thread about Interactive Investor and wasn't hugely encouraged. Alliance Trust *look* great, but I've not seen much feedback from users on the quality of their service, and I'm wondering what the future holds for them.
