Hi Guys and Girls,

My wife and I moved abroad for work in July 2013 and will be returning to the UK July 2017 and looking to get our first mortgage around January 2018.

I have started to do some credit report checks and I have a bit of an issue with registering for electoral role.

When the credit agencies ask my address I put my parents address where I grew up and where all my UK accounts are registered to, although prior to leaving the UK in 2013 I was not living there.

I am registered at another LA which was my previous address, and indeed used this to vote in the recent election by proxy.

I vaguely remember being told by the LA of my parents via email when I enquired that I cannot change given my circumstances, was this correct? I have just found a .gov online form where I can change it so have entered my parents address, although as I am still out the country I am not sure if this was correct.

I am a bit confused as to what to do. Do I state my previous address where I was registered to vote as my address for the 3 years I have been abroad when applying for credit checks?

Any advice much appreciated.

You wait til you have an address over here and register at your own new address. If you start telling the government you live here when you don't you could have all kinds of tax issues as well as getting fined for making an untrue declaration.

When you come back are you going to be at your parents first before buying? Ideally you need your accounts and electoral roll to be at the same address. The credit checks will be on your "current" address provided so you want all active accounts and electoral roll to be at that address. Electoral roll is a major identification check confirming you live at the address supplied.
