New Meters?

Options
I have two electricity supplies coming into the farm, both of which have two meters as we have Economy 7 storage heaters. I wanted to switch suppliers from SSE but having got through approval process it seems Eon are unable to complete the switch as our meters are not suitable?
I spoke to customer services for both suppliers and am none the wiser - SSE reckon we're not due an upgrade until 2030! Eon are adamant we cannot change to their "new customer" tariff with our current meters.
What's going on here? Surely a meter simply measures how much juice is used? I cannot see how it matters what sort they are. Can anyone enlighten me?

Many thanks

It might not be a standard e7 meter. It could be a complex meter arrangement which restricts what tariffs you can switch to elsewhere. These are usually old legacy set-ups which are no longer supported for switching. Changing from a complex meter set-up may also entail some form of electrical re-wiring on your side.

In addition is it a business supply (you mentioned a farm) or domestic?

Are they standard single phase supplies or is again is it a 3 phase business supply?

I cannot think of other reasons but they are things that have prevented/delayed similar switches in the past.

You say you have 2 supplies, do you have 2 cutout fuses or one. If you have one they are classed as related MPANs and these can be complex and limited in terms of tariff. If you look at the 'S' numbers from the 2 differnent supplies, the top line is 8 digitgs. What are digits 3, 4 & 5 from the 2 S numbers (post them), these are the MTC and will allow someone within the industry to see if the 2 supplies are classified as related.

I think it works like this:
There is a normal domestic supply to the house with two meters, one for E7 and one for regular hours.. Numbers are:
    S 01 501 100
    S 02 578 115

The farm outbuildings have 3-phase supply but are on a separate domestic account with a different supplier. Again two meters, one of which is E7. There is only one number for this:
    S 02 805 105:

    Help much appreciated
    Cheers!

The 501 is 24/7 meter. The 578 depends on where you live (1st 2 digits of 2nd line) but it is not basic E7. The 805 is a standard E7. For the outbuilding you should have no issue switching it to any supplier offering and E7 tariff. For the house I need to know the area but when you switch you need to switch the 2 at once and normally this would require you to contact a supplier directly not via a switching site.

    Good morning Mattingleymike,

I'm so sorry for the delay in replying to you, thank you to everyone else for helping out.

It does sound like you have a complex metering set up here, although you have a domestic supply.

Your current supplier should be able to let you know exactly what set up you have.

If it is the case, then you'd need to contact us to obtain a quote, as we only have the one tariff available for Economy 10, RHT ect and I'm afraid the new tariffs are only for single rate or E7.

If I can help any more please ask me :)

    Thank you

    Welcome to MSE, Mattingleymike :hello:

As I understand it you are currently supplied by Eon
And according to Eon, they suggest you have a complex metering arrangement (I'm not disagreeing)

If correct, and your profile is too, then your posts, I fear, simply reinforce the advice I so often give here on this board
i.e. do not attempt to switch supplier with that type of metering in place, as attempts to do so invariably end in tears,

I'm not sure who did it, but someone at some time in the past switched your property from SSE to Eon (or whatever names they were respectivley trading under at the time).

Sorry, but it doesn't look good for you.
  • Thanks all. We've now had our old E7 meter removed as we're ditching the storage heaters in favour of more radiators. Unfortunately our MSE account is locked as it thinks we are part way through a switch even though it was cancelled by Eon on 29th Sept...
How can I get this unlocked so I can get the process running again?
