Previous owners on V5C

Simple query, should be easy for you guys :)

I bought a Merc 190E recently, and it was advertised as 'one owner'. I was sorting out the paperwork the other day and was looking at the V5C. It gives the previous owner's name and address, and a box labelled 'previous owners'. In the box is the number 1.

Is the 1 the previous owner, or does it mean previous owners before him? Put another way, was this a one-owner or a two-owner car when I bought it?

Many thanks.

you are now on the v5 , and the car had previous owners , in your case ONE previous owner , clue: the person that you bought the car off was the previous owner

Hehe, thanks, I had guessed that! I'm thinking that the V5C is slightly ambiguous - they give the details of the previous owner, and next to it the number of previous owners. You could read that as 'previous to the one listed here'.

So Mr X is the previous owner, there is 1 previous owner (him) and I am the second. That's fine, and thank you for explaining.

Just be happy its not 27 :)

Mate bought an old classic mini during the late 80's and he always commented on how it sounded quieter than my mini.

Had to make room in a lockup to fit another mini and cleared just enough stuff to park his car in, brought the other one back to find it didnt fit in teh space we made. Turned out his was 2" shorter.

Inner wings well sculpted with fibreglass and filler. No wonder it sounded quieter.

I'd have paid a lot less if it had been 27!

I'm thinking of my dear old Yamaha XT600E. In the 15 years before I had got it, it had done 16k miles with 11 owners. It was shabby, but started first time every time and used no oil. And I'm pretty sure those 11 weren't little old ladies who used it for shopping.

The Merc is a peach. The PO was (I think) an elderly gentleman who kept it garaged, did a modest mileage, didn't fiddle with things, took it to a M-B main dealer once a year for a service, and documented everything. It's built like a tank, and designed to be easily maintained. I like that.

Just to be pedantic, although it is an important point, the V5c doesn't show owners, it's a record of registered keepers. Not always the same thing.

Yes, understood. I was using 'owners' as shorthand.
