Oven built-in or built-under ??

First time here - yikes! Need some help to identify if I need a built-in or a built-under oven in my kitchen. Existing gas hob sits on top of counter surface which runs along one side of kitchen. Beneath hob is an empty space where my old oven was, with cupboards either side which also fit beneath the counter surface. The space for the oven has the bare wall at the back (with gas/elec connections) but either side and the bottom is enclosed making a space measuring 71.5cmH x 52cmD x 56.5cmW. The bottom has support struts (?) beneath it.

I've spent hours trying to work out if this means it's built in or built under ... such conflicting information out there. I think it's built-under, but just when I think I'm sure I read something else that makes me doubt it. I have a photo of the space but don't know how to post that!!

Any advice welcomed - thanks so much

Built under, a built in is taller and is mounted above worktop level

I think you misunderstand Kiran. A below worktop oven can be built in or built under. Built in ovens are encased in an oven housing and built under ovens just slot into a standard 60 cm space between cupboards (I think).

It is confusing though. Is there an oven housing in place?

This is the most straightforward explanation that I could find to explain the difference.

    Very clear explanation!

I would say the OP needs a single built-in oven.

If this does not fill the space height-wise then a second (higher up) base is needed in the housing unit and the gap below the oven could be used to fit a shallow drawer, or just left empty and fitted with a fascia to match the kitchen door fronts.

My new (waiting a long time to be fitted) built under unit has two ovens, as I don't want the grill to be in the main oven, meaning you can't use both at one time.

Built it, oven goes in a 4 sided cavity. Built under, oven goes down to the floor.

My understanding, and I don't mind being corrected is, a built under can be either a single or double that is build under the worktop. Usually but not always, a single requires a housing and a double is mounted straight onto the floor. A built in oven is taller and would not fit under a worktop. This is how it has been in all the ones I have fitted.

Its pretty simple - there is no such thing as a built in or built under oven. All integrated ovens are built in and its down to where you put it that determines if you called it built under or in an eye level housing.

You first need to establish if you want a single or double oven.

If its a single oven then they are a standard 600mm in height. To fit this under the worktop you will need an undercounter oven housing which usually comes with a 600mm niche with a drawer or blender below it.

A double oven can be had in 2 sizes.

An integrated double oven for built under installation is 720mm high and will go under the worktop. This can be done either in a housing or on brackets screwed to adjacent cabinets. Note that this oven can also be built in a tall housing if you prefer it high level. The oven is essentialy designed to go under worktops.

A normal doouble oven is 900mm high and will ONLY go in a tall housing so for the purpose of this discussion, is irrelevant. Just dont end up buying it in error.

    Hope this helps.
