Noisy Neighbours - How do you cope?

The flat above me is rented and until now I've been lucky with my neighbours, they've been considerate and a pleasure to live near, I've made some really nice friends. Now I have a new neighbour who bangs, thumps, slams, hoovers etc at very unsocial hours.

I am planning to move myself very soon so I am trying to be positive and tell myself that she won't be living above me for ever but in the interim does anyone have any advice/experience on how to cope with noisy neighbours? She is wearing me down at a rate of knots!

Thanks in advance xx

Have you tried talking to her? Maybe she's unaware of how the sound carries?

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • Yes, twice and nicely too. But it hasn't really sunk in.

The place next to me seems to rent out to students quite a bit so I get noise problems from time to time. A polite yet firm letter through their front door telling them that the noise is unacceptable often does the trick. For coping with the noise my short term solution is ear plugs. Pura fit moldex seem to the best I have found in terms of both comfort and effectiveness, and when combined with wireless over ear headphones it can basically block out all unwanted sound. With the ear plugs in and headphones on I can listen to my TV at a gentle low volume while not being bothered by neighbours noise at all.

My solution is similar: earbud headphones with a set of large industrial ear-defenders worn over the top.

I sent a letter to the people that lived above me once worked a treat they didn't realise x
  • How soon are you thinking of moving? Nobody likes to get involved in a neighbour dispute. My MIL made headlines a few years ago with the issues that she had - we even had to have a riot van at her funeral :(

Anyway...if its a very short period of time, then invest in some headphones. Do you have the option of contacting her landlord?

I have some problems myself so understand I have a neighbour who doesn't even live in the building but is related to a tenant who is that brings their dog round between 5-6am every morning and lets it run around and bark, then doesn't even bother to pick up the mess most of the time and he wakes up the entire block, when speaking to him he either claims to not speak English or plays the "racist" card and gets really agressive then like a child tells all his friends about the racist neighbours he has.

Apart from that with me, the only noticable noises bar some diy now and again is from guests who sleep in the bigger bedroom as the upstaits neighbour does shift work and watches tv around 5am in morning and the person downstairs has a baby and puts on Cbeebies around 6am which wakes guests up.

I've one of the above. Actually, I had bought it because of a colleague's laugh. she used to drive me crazy. then I started to use it in public transportations too. very useful.

if you own the flat, sound-proofing is a must. here in my home, the walls are like a piece paper. you can hear people sneezing , tv noise, talking etc.
