Car tax change of DD bank account

I currently pay my car tax by direct debit from one of my current accounts. Due to reasons which best belong on a bank account forum, I have the car tax direct debit on an account which no longer requires it, and towards the end of October/start of November (whenever the correct time is) I would like to move it to an account which needs a DD.

How do I do this whilst making sure that I'm neither paying for a month twice, nor end up temporarily untaxed? The gov.uk page on changing bank account simply says to cancel and set up a new one, but doesn't go into detail about timings to avoid either situation.

(I'll go into the reasons why it needs to be this particular DD I move if anyone's interested, but the short story is that this is by far the easiest one to move).

You don't need to cancel the tax, just cancel the DD and set up a new one. Call the DVLA to do so. Simple.

You can't pay by direct debit over the phone.

And to pre-empt the next question, I trust the good folks here more than the good folks at the Post Office, when it comes to not overpaying.
