My Wifes mother lived directly adjacent to a trainline, about a mile from the station, just enough distance get get a decent amount of speed ! They both slept soundly, I on the other hand, when visiting used to jump out of my skin at 0445 when the first one went past and every 30 minutes after that !

I once lived in a rented house that was once a station masters house at a disused station. The tracks were only a few feet from the house. The local trains chugging though were not a problem but - when the Virgin Pendolino went past at 80mph it wasn't the noise that was the problem - it was the fact the vacuum caused by the train passing at speed sucked all the warm air out of the house!! I mean really - you could feel the air rush inside despite triple glazing etc. I believe there were some ventilation bricks around the property and as the train passed on a winters night you could watch a thermometer drop by nearly 10 degrees as the warm air was sucked out and the cold air pulled in. I didn't last long there...

I've lived next to a train station before. There is vibration, particularly on the top floor, which some people just can't get on with, but I adapted very quickly. For me (a commuter) the location is perfect, but for light sleepers, it's a big no.

There are some newbuld flats by me, right next to the station, and they seem quite popular. I think the trains finish though around midnight, and they're in a gated unit where people can park. I think the station could be a bit of a bonus for anyone using the train to get to work each day.

I lived in a flat overlooking the trainline from London Liverpool Street to Norwich/Clacton etc & it was the worst thing ever!!!! The trains ran throughout the night & it was so hard to sleep I ended up taking sleeping tablets to knock me out! The windows were quite thin though but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone! We never got used to it.. Sunday's weren't relaxing, neither were the evenings.. we seemed to also be in the location where the train sounded the horn the most! Never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever again!!

I moved from middle of nowhere having mainlines into Edinburgh at back of my flat didn't bother me at all. Then moved to two other similiar flats and now live elsewhere near line and doesn't bother me either. Prefer a railway to motorway any day. The sleeper sometimes wakes me sometimes but even then just surface as it were and then go back to sleep!

The OH's nan lived in Colliers Wood in London and her house was directly over a London Underground tube line and every few minutes from under the house you'd hear a rumbling and feel a very slight vibration a bit like an earth tremor.

I found it quite fascinating and would sit in the house listening for the next one to pass under. Nan never heard or noticed them.

Don't think I could cope over a flight path though, tyre marks on the roof isn't my thing :D.

I lived opposite a railway line when I was growing up. I got used to the trains during the day, but at night there was a long freight train which used to wake me up at 4.30am every morning because the whole house would vibrate.

I like the sound of the trains. They never wake me up or bother me. But then I like trains in general so it's a no brainer for me to live by the track.
