Question about switching provider on property just moved into

A mate and I moved into this house a couple of weeks ago.

Last week we received a bill that was mainly usage from before we moved in, which we have passed on the the letting agency to pass back to the Landlord.

Now I am back online here, I have checked for the best provider for my area and want to switch providers.

My housemate thinks we should call up and register with the original provider before switching... should we, or can we just register with another provider straight away?

Any guidance would be gratefully received...

  • Hello.....You should definitely register with the current supplier first by calling them and advising that you are the new tenant. When you switch supplier the process can take 4-6 weeks to complete, so regardless of your choice, the current supplier of the property will require payment for the electricity used during that time.

Pixie is right. To be honest otherwise your landlord may get the bill and you will end up on bad terms for that as he/she will expect you to contact all utilities when you move in. Take a read and get them set up. It will make your transfer less painles anyway. Remember that the final bill may end up in a debt collection stage and you may walk into that when your landlord tells them you are in there, it's not worth the hassle.

Take your readings whenever you change supplier or move home, it helps get your bills right.
