English Heritage V National Trust

English Heritage V National Trust - which is the best in your opinion please?

  • National Trust for us. Plenty of places to visit. Would like to have EH too but cannot justify the cost for a handful of sites, many of which are only an hour or twos visit rather than half or a full day with the NT.

Depends where you live and how far you want to travel to visit places. There's more National Trust near me. but a relative has more EH properties that his kids like running round.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I have National Trust & CADW (Welsh Historic Monuments) which allows free entry to English Heritage after you've had it for more than one year.

    Kids love visiting both sites.

  • Thanks for the replies folks.
Do National Trust members have to pay for car parking or any entrance fees to sites?

No, car park is free, and entrance fees are free (unless there are special events on such as outdoor theatres which do incur a charge)

I have been a member of both and prefer National Trust. There seem to be more properties. I also found English Heritage tended to have more ruins and fields and I prefer nice stately homes.

I did join the Historic Houses Association one year and really enjoyed that. It is better for certain parts of the country. One thing I liked is they have private homes on the list that only open a few times a year for HHA members.

There are a couple of places where you need to pay parking on NT properties. One of which is Wakehurst in Sussex where car park prices are steep for NT members to counterbalance the free entry (its funded and managed by Kew). There may be others, check the NT website.

There may be a small extra fee to pay for children's activities also.

I agree with Hermia about EH being more ruins whilst NT are homes and grounds.
