Repair or replace boiler

Question for a close friend who asked me for advice :
Heat only boiler which supplies central heating and hot water via a cylinder. Approx 20y old....and efficiency seems to be around 60% according to online sites. Needs several things repaired at a quoted cost of about £1000. Alternative option given by engineer is a new high efficiency heat only boiler fitted for £3500.
Needs to be heat only boiler due to set up already in the large house.
What would people's thoughts be?

1) no-brainer. Forget it. You reach a point in a boiler'slife when you're just throwing good money after bad1) Approx 20y old....Needs ...about £1000
2) ... new high efficiency heat only boiler fitted for £3500.
2) As with anything, shop around. Get quotes from at least 3 independant gassafe engineers (BG will be double the price). Make sure the quotes are identical ie boiler make, extra stats, pipework, flu, rads, flushing etc otherwise comparing price is pointless
Boilers seem to be £1000 + Labour will vary a lot

or here's one for £500:

For better advice, ask here:

or better still, lots of gasafe engineers answer posts here:
http://www.diynot.com/diy/forums/plumbing/
(give them full details like size of property, current system, nbr of rads, nbr of occupants etc as they can be even more impatient than we are here sometimes!)0
