good grease filter material for hood vents

Hi
I have used an external vented hood in reirculation mode for a good 2 years before I finally hired a tradesmen to sort it out and it has finally been sorted.
So now we can use it and remove the charcoal filter (which is meant to be for recirculation mode).
The thing is I like the charcoal filter it has kept the motor absolutely pristine as it has absorbed up all the grease.
But I don't like the restriction in airflow it causes. I was thinking of modifying the charcoal filter but taking out the charcoal beads and fabric and replacing it with some sort of sponge filter to soak up all the grease. Will it do the job do you reckon? What sort of filter should I use? Ideally it needs to be 1" thick so it fits snugly into the charcoal filter tray.
The reason why I don't want the charcoal filter is because it causes too much restriction in airflow and the motor works very hard (and thus noisy). A less dense sponge filter will be more more easier on the motor as it will not be as restrictive.

Does the hood only have the charcoal filter? There's normally another grease filter - either paper filter fabric or wire-mesh.
Perhaps make a filter using normal cooker hood filter fabric - this sort of thing:

Wire mesh is good and can be cleaned in the dishwasher.0

yes it does have wire mesh, but the charcoal filter is still greasy despite having wire mesh so it's not very effective.0
