Daughter scammed on ebay purchase

My stupid daughter has just been scammed on an Ebay purchase. I cannot believe what she has done, she sent £350 for the purchase of an Ipad through BACS at the sellers request. The ebay account has now been closed. She contacted her bank which is the Halifax and the bank confirmed that the money was transferred to another Halifax account, although they would not disclose the bank account contact details.

In cases like this should the matter be reported to the police? or any other advice would be very much appreciated.

  • Report it to action fraud, don't expect anything to be done about it and move on. An expensive life lesson.

Tell eBay what's happened as well. A friend, rather naively perhaps, did the same for £100 or so, and eBay refunded it as a goodwill gesture (which surprised me, but there we go!). Whatever the rights and wrongs of the whole situation, eBay might do something similar, even if they don't have to.
  • Report it to action fraud. When you get your fraud reference number pass it to the bank and ask them if they will refund the payment - they have absolutely no liability to do so but it is worth trying, especially as it was an 'inter-bank' transaction.

The eBay account cannot be closed if there was a transaction on the account, there is a grace period, from memory, of 30 days. You should therefore report it to eBay. Or did she buy 'off' eBay as well as without Paypal?

Hopefully it was her own money and she will have an early life lesson.
