Council tax

We recently had a small extension built (utility room). This was completed in July.

Randomly today we received a council tax bill which billed us up to today at band D but then from tomorrow until Marc 31st 2017 we are band E. No letter to explain. I rang the council who had no idea but said it was a matter for the valuation board, not the council.

I rang the valuation board who had no idea either. They seemed to think that it would only change if the property changed hands.

We moved in over 3 years ago.

When we bought it, it was Band D. The conveyancer didn't mention anything about the prospect of it going up to Band E.

Any advice please

    A change should happen (unless they're correcting an error) on sale or legal transfer - check and see if you have a marker showing the band was to be reviewed (they may have updated the system already though but you may be lucky) - https://www.gov.uk/council-tax-bands

    The council will know what the change is for - the valuation office reports sent to the council do say. Usually though a council only has one or two staff who deal with the actual banding work - the other staff should however at least know who to ask in the council to check.

  • Thanks. I have checked that site. It just says that it had changed as of today, nothing on there to indicate improvements etc. Bit random.

    Could it be that they should have upped it when we bought it 3 years ago and have just realised their error? If so, should the solicitor have told us that it would go up when we bought it?

    Solicitor could only advise you the CT band may increase, only the Valuation Office Agency would know if it would definitely increase. I would ask the VOA again why the band was increased, they increased it, so must know why.
    If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

    Had the property been extended some time prior to your purchase ?

    I'd imagine there was an improvement marker for the extension and they've only just caught up with the outstanding change (for whatever reason).
