When did Dinner plates become so big?!

I have white Breakfast plates. They are just the perfect size, 9 inches in diameter.
But I do use larger dinner plates with guests! Just for show LOL.
Re the stuffing your face issue at an open buffet. I just can't do that. It would make me sick. I absolutely detest an overflowing plate Ugh. But each to their own. I rarely leave anything behind though!
My OH, on the other hand is what I can only describe as a scoffer. He has NEVER left as much as a scrap of lettuce on a plate. But he does work it off (I think). I am constantly having a go about the fact that never leaves ANYTHING on the plate whether he is full or not!
He says it comes from his childhood growing up in deep countryside where you ate what you were given and were very glad of it. His parents made a show of giving anything left on the kids plates to the dogs and chickens. Never left anything on the plate then, and continues to this day!0 -
I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.

And while we are on the subject of dinner plates, what is the obsession with square plates or oblong plates? We have just returned from holiday and the best tasting food to me was the ones that were served simply, other meals served on different sized and shaped plates looked good but the taste wasn't there.
My current dinner plates are big, but I have got salad plates and pasta dishes. I am building up my Denby collection, each time I visit the retail outlet I add to it. It is expensive but so far it has lasted really well and is brilliant at withstanding damage in the dishwasher, which was a definite problem with cheaper brands.0 -

Mine is the same, I've been working on training him to serve up less, and he can have seconds if required. Most times he is happy with the lesser amount.0 -
What irritates me most in restaurants is the custom of putting food on slates !!! and when your chips turn up they are about half a dozen in a glorified egg cup I am definitely turning into a grumpy old woman

Don't talk to me about square plates. Used my birthday money to get a set I'd wanted for ages. (Maybe I should get out more) Broke one as I dropped it as it came out of the box then found the dinner plates were too big to spin in the microwave. Chipped a side plate in the sink. They all went to the charity shop and I have gone back to my mismatched but round plates.Shady pines ma, shady pines0

Quite apart from the plate size - I'm thankful that I don't recall any pressure to eat up everything on my plate as I grew up. It may have happened and I forgot about it - but I doubt it, as I do recall it's very much a Family Value in my family to be slim. My mother wouldnt let either herself (or my father) put on weight if she could help it and was always careful about the amount she ate.
I think the other thing that strikes me is that there does seem to be a link between people who shovel their food down as fast as they can manage and barely chewing it en route and the (large) size they are. I know I've had it commented on frequently as to how slowly I eat - but I think that's one way to help ensure you digest your food properly and does help somewhat in feeling full enough not to go back for more food - at least sometimes. Though, to me, it's obvious that you take your time eating your food when you have someone else with you - ie because you're talking to them - aren't you? and you can't eat and talk at the same time imo.
They say it takes about 20 minutes for the stomach to register it's had some food put in it and start feeling satisfied - and I would say that's about right imo.
Food hasn't been the issue as to why I'm currently size 16 label - ie 2 sizes too big - it's the fact that it's become the "civilised" thing to do to drink wine at home as an everyday thing. Still working on weaning myself off that one. Also having to ignore the fact that I can't find one single person to agree with me that I'm overweight still at the moment - they all tell me I'm fine (because they're used to seeing lots of fat people around these days or are fat themselves) - so I know they're never going to agree a size 16 label person (ie size 18 really) is too big and I have to try and tune out that chorus of "You're okay". Thank goodness I'm old enough to remember when the "outsize range" of clothes started at size 16 (ie the clothes that would have a size 14 label put on them these days).0 -

Slates are great, I have 3 that I use as pizza platters when I have a houseful, They are totally MSE as they were left over from re-roofing after last winters storms...so may have to give them up depending on this years weather0
