Addition driver on insurance

Hi,
I'm adding my partner to my car insurance when it's up for renewal at the end of October. He hasn't had a car for the last coupe of years as it was really old and now we only really need one car. He did however have an accident (very small) as he pulled out of our driveway 3 years ago. I've done an insurance quote as it asks how much damage was done. He can't remember as he never claimed on his insurance to fix his car but I'd expect the woman who was involved in the accident claimed. We're not really sure how it works as I selected the option "damage - unknown amount" and then it asks how much the damage cost. I'm concerned that if we don't get this right now, theninsirance will be invalid. He drives me crazy because his paperwork filing system is completely messed up so can't find who he was insured with at the time to ring them up!!
Any ideas?

  • Just put amount unknown.
  • Ok, thanks. Just curious as to how it all works with additional drivers. If my partner has an accident and is at fault. Obviously when it comes to insure the car next year it will be more expensive. Will it affect my no claims discount as he's on my insurance policy?

If the other woman claimed on her insurance and gave the details of his car then he would have known about it. They would have contacted his insurance company and then contacted him to ask the details of what happened.

It won't affect your no claims discount, as you haven't claimed, (but they will have accounted for your partner's accident with a massive rise in base premium)

I've had a couple of "accidents" over the years, and the one thing your insurance never tell you is the third party payout, yet they always ask what it was when you change insurer!
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

My daughter was told how much the third party payout was when she asked

An accident 3 years ago wont have a massive rise in base premium. You can put down £500 or £5000, it wont make much of a difference in the premiums.

You can find out by asking the insurer concerned, if your partner still has the claims reference.

Agreed. Just been running quotes to add Sian to the 5 series and it makes £30 a year difference despite her having a (small) fault claim in April this year. Hardly a massive jump!
