They say if you remember the sixties you weren't there. Well Edie Sedgwick (Sienna Miller) was the ultimate 'it girl' in the swinging sixties. She was an American socialite and heiress who burst onto the New York scene like a supernova and hooked up with Andy Warhol (Guy Pearce) joining his wild world known as The Factory (a former downtown hat factory he had transformed into a bohemian and creative haven). At just 22 years old Edie became his muse starring in his underground
films and as quickly as she had arrived her flame was extinguished. She died at just 28 from a drugs overdose.
George Hickenlooper's Factory Girl captures the sex, drugs and rock and roll of the swinging sixties beautifully. A hazy trip down memory lane. Sadly Edie's huge impact in those days hasn't survived the test of time as she is barely remembered today while Warhol is world renowned. Nevertheless the end credits, peppered with interviews, give us a better idea of the real life Edie Sedgwick from the people who actually knew her and are still around today.
Sienna Miller, who could have been Edie's twin sister, gives her best performance to date. While Guy Pearce gives an acid tongue exceptional portrayal as the thin and pasty Warhol.
This movie is a fascinating look at the meteoric rise and fall of the woman who became a quintessential icon of American pop culture. There is a scene in the film when Warhol and Edie discuss how they will be remembered after they die. The irony is that Warhol outlasted his 15 minutes of fame while Edie ironically just exemplified it.
