Unauthorised payment from my bank current acc into Unknown PayPal acc

How is it possible for some random with a PAYPAL acc to get my bank to pay them a sum of money that doesn't even go into my PayPal account or that I haven't authorised.

How can I get my cash back? PayPal have bounced me back to Barclays rather than explain how this PayPal account accessed my current account.
I'm dreading trying to explain this to Barclays call centre staff in the morning , even the most simple enquiries take ages because I can never understand what the staff are saying.
Has this happened to anyone else?

The only way I can think could happen if someone managed to set up a direct debit on your Barclays bank account into this unknown Paypal account. Although that would be difficult as before Paypal add bank accounts they deposit two small amounts to bank account and ask for them back when the deposits appear on the account to prove the bank account owner authorised it.

If you have an unauthorized payment, then your bank needs to be the first port of call.

Paypal also asks questions that are on a customers credit file as well now before they even add the bank account never mind sending verification codes. normally a 1p transaction with a 4 digit code they send.

You don't need to know how it was done. An unauthorised payment was taken by direct debit, so you claim under the direct debit guarantee. The bank will refund your cash while they investigate.

You're making an assumption that it was a DD. If it was then this is the right way to proceed, but the OP really needs to clarify how the payment was made.

Paypal's only means of withdrawing money from bank accounts is via DD, isn't it? How else could they do it?

Using the debit card as a funding source.
This is actually far more likely than the DD method.

This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com
