I rub my finger on the wallpaper around the socket so it leaves a template of the socket. Then peel back and cut the cross. I loosen the socket so the paper can sit nicely just inside the socket.
  • Don't attack the socket with a knife . . .

As suggested, use a pair of scissors (preferably, small, sharp and pointy)
  • I use the loosen socket and cut a cross in the paper method. I have to say that I never turn the power off though.

A short pair of nail scissors, not the curved ones, I've found are best for this job.

  • Use the scoring approach but use a pen to mark it instead of using the stanley knife. Then cut it when it's on the pasting table
  • Papering behind the socket always gives the best results and is the way the pros do it. And it won't peel away over time.

Any paste residue on the socket will wipe away cleanly.

I can't totally remove the power sockets from the wall (there are tons of wires behind them.)
Really? You don't have modern wireless sockets?

    Tut tut! :rotfl:
  • Thanks for all the great ideas. Very helpful indeed.

As an ex electrician I would think seriously before you remove the socket completely. Quite often the wires in the box are so jammed in that it is a serious problem replacing them. I am speaking from experience here. Just loosening the face of the socket by a few millimetres should be quite enough for you to tuck the wall paper behind the face of the socket. Ensuring that the power is off, of course.
