Private plate recommendations

I'm looking to purchase a private plate for my husband as a birthday pressie. Can anyone recommend a good company with competitive prices?

Thanks.

  • I'd say if you find one you like, double check it's not on the dvla site first.

Don't forget if you just want initials, the TxXX xxx range are reserved for these sort of sales e.g. TT52 ABC and can be cheaper than a private plate from a dealer

    The current style ones:
For older ones like TB03 ABC or AB58 ABC it's £250
    For newer like AB11 ABC it's £399

They also do the prefix style ones like C12 ABC for £399-£499

    Official DVLA site:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Definitely check the DVLA site first, if it's on there it's not possible for it to be cheaper anywhere else.

I bought a private plate in 1995 direct from DVLA. I did a search and its my nick name. I snapped it up quickly and because its very old and quite rare now its worth a decent amount. Its currently in my Merc but has spent many years on retention.

My advice is to have an idea of what you want and how much you want to pay and then grab it if you are happy with it :)

100% stick with DVLA. I found one which was cheaper on another site and by the time that they had this and that it would of cost more. DVLA all the way.

First of all, are you sure he really wants one? If he changes his car regularly, it's just an extra layer of hassle and expense. I bought 'matching' numbers for my wife and me (letter, single digit, 3 initials) a few years ago. She loves hers and has even promised it to a younger relative (same initials) when she no longer needs it. I got sick of mine quite quickly, after swapping cars a few times, and then paid the £80 to put it on retention. I doubt if I will put it on a car again. So you may be buying him a burden rather than a present.

I used New Reg, (www.newreg.co.uk) who were reasonably-priced and easy to deal with. Their search facility was pretty good, allowing you to play around with letters and numbers to your heart's content.
