I had an overdraft facility of £1500 and have had for years. About 4 weeks after I sent the standard letter to HSBC enquiering over the bank charge issue, I went to cash point and was refused money, I rang them up and asked what's going on. Was told bank had withdrawn O/D facility as it was discretionary and they had decided it was ... I quote "no longer appropriate", leaving me 3 weeks till salary time with no money at all (been self employed beforehand and had zero credit)
So I hunkered down and struggled through the month, sold some bits on ebay and transfered £200 from ebay sales(Paypal) to HSBC to cover 4 standing orders due on 23rd Month. On day 4 of transfer which takes 5 days at the most, I checked online and found HSBC bounced all 4 directs debits totalling £93 and charged me £25 per time, next day £200 arrives but too late. I rang to question the charges and after a few minutes the telephonist informs me that her supervisor has told her she cannot discuss charges any more as I was taking legal action against the bank!!!! I said I'd only written to the bank(the standard letter from this site) requesting bank statements. She said, Ah so you're going to start legal proceedings, I said I don't know yet as I've had no response but given the current behaviour of HSBC who would blame me. At the end of the month I check balance and find two S/O for £103 have been re presented from two weeks earlier, costing me £50 first time, which swallowed my emergency £200 cover by £9 so got charged another £50 and then unautherised o/d fee £38, interest £14 at which point I crack, salary paid in 30th, drew the lot out but not before bank carved off £120, rang to close account on 31st instructed all standing orders ,DD's stopped. Checked on 1st online and found they'd bounced a S/O already for £11 and charged me £25, later my swathe of bank statements arrived and when I had a really close look I was staggered to find I was getting slaughtered every month, sometimes up to £250. I thought I was just crap with money! I am earning £2500 per month after tax and I received a letter from HSBC reqarding the outstanding £68 I owed and did I need assistance etc a joke I presume. So whilst changing banks everying bounced I suddenly seem to owe hundreds pounds everywhere and my credit is below zero, my new bank will only issue me with a Solo card! I couldn't get HP on a bag of crisps at the moment and all outstanding bills are over me like a rash, even Orange who sometimes let a month or two slide before writing a polite reminder to settle bill, pulled the plug after 4 days overdue. Life is crap, and HSBC have put me in the !!!!, and now no bloody chance of claiming refund until case settled in a million years time. I have been told sue them! great, meanwhile I'm stuffed and slightly suprised at HSBC dropping on me like a ton of bricks, after all they've been making a fortune off my back. So it ain't all rosy in the fxxxxxg garden of reclaimed charges, you've been warned. Cheers from one extremely !!!!ed off ex HSBC

  • OMG! I also had a £1500 overdraft with hsbc when i asked for my bank statements (and i was right near the limit - im a student) AND when they refunded me the £200 i was owed. No problems or anything. If they can treat me like this and you like you have been i dont know what is wrong and you have definatly been treated unfairly in my opinion, i just wouldnt know where to go from here.

You shouldn't be surprised. The banks are going to be very, very, twitchy about this. Because (apparently) so many people have done this successfully, they will clearly do all they can to stop it and prevent it from happening in the future. They knew what you were up to, and declared war. It looks like what they did was disgusting, and you may be able to challenge it in some way, but you shouldn't be surprised.

I'd be interested if an expert sees this, and gives you some advice.

The bank may have done the OP a roundabout sort of favour. I bet bank statements get read from now on. I just cannot believe that the OP was getting hammered with bank charges of ~£250 a month and hadn't noticed. I would notice if 250 pence was missing from my bank balance.
  • hi

if they didnt inform you in writing with fair notice that they were withdrawing the overdraft you should definately make a complaint to the FOS as its not then about bank charges and they should deal with it. make sure you complain about any default they may have put on your credit history too.

    good luck
