Pyrex Explosion

Bought a new pyrex measuring jug from Tesco 2 days ago. Its been sitting on the worktop ready to be washed, it had a couple of spoons in it. I just placed another spoon in it and washed my hands then whilst i walked out the kitchen i heard a shatter, My pyrex jug had exploded! The only piece that is still intact is the handle. The only thing i have used it for was stock last night. I'm so shocked, i have an old pyrex bowl that has been abused for years that is still in one piece. I also have a bowl that i bought at the same time as the jug which i am tempted to chuck.
What makes me even irate is the thought of what if any of my young uns was in the room?? It could have been lethal:mad:

I've had similar happen with a pyrex casserole dish.. Usually it only does it if there is a fault.. I'd sweep up the hundreds and thousands of pieces and take it back to tesco.. it may be a dodgy batch of jugs.. sometimes if they had a little bubble in the glass or a hairline, invisible to the naked eye crack in it this can happen.. it is possible it was knocked off the shelf in the shop and put back causing it to explode.. they are SO messy when they go as well!!

When mine went it had 2lb of minced pork in it and the glass and meat went all over me.. I was dripping glass and meat all over the floor.. we were finding bits of it for months despite vacuuming it up straight away!!

  • The glass is constantly under stress and normally safe. I chipped one and could hear it periodically pinging as pieces flew off.
I remember a very tragic incident when a child of 4 helped her mother clear the table and dropped a casserole. It exploded and the poor child bled to death within minutes.

That's a good idea, I would go with that one. I had been thinking I would definitely take the jug back to tesco, but I think you might get more compesation from the company themselves. I put all the picked up on a plain paper and take a photo of it, include the hande, then send it to them along with a copy of your receipt, and make a claim.
I would then also go back to tesco and take them a copy of the photo try and get a refund from them as well.

  • My man cleared it up and i told him to put it all in a box and return it to tesco but he put it in the bucket. It is however at the top of the bin, i may fish it out or see if i can get a decent picture as is, there is still bits on the kitchen floor. I have sent them an email, haven't made a claim yet. I know i won't be buying any more pyrex now, i have just found my receipt so will be taking the small bowl i bought back but i am not sure if they will accept it, i haven't used it yet and it doesn't say pyrex on it like the older bowls do and i took the pyrex sticker off it.

  • If you've still got the jug handle, take it back to tesco. They should accept the bowl back as well, just say you washed it before use and the label fell off.
I have to say I think that you've just been unlucky, I've been using pyrex for years, and I think it's only exploded once.

I was given a pyrex dinner service for a wedding pressie back in 1968. Plates and casseroles regularly exploded .. each one only once - of course!
