I used to write to penpals in Germany when I was in my teens but we lost contact many years ago, and being girls I doubt if I could find them again online, as chances are they'll now have different surnames!

I wondered about Postcrossing, I would love to send and receive postcards but am wary of just giving out my address to people, iyswim!

Postcrossing is very safe I have been doing it just over a month now. You request to send a card and you are given and address. Then it becomes a travelling postcard and then received and you can see how many days and miles it takes .
Lots of German postcrossers on there,.

I've seen stories about people writing to soldiers serving away from home and have no family. So are glad to build friendships. They do it with parcels as well, especially at Christmas.

  • Thank you for posting the link to Postcrossing, I love getting "real" mail, not just brown envelopes! I have just signed up for this and am looking forward to finding out all about it. I have had a Canadian penpal for 63 years, have never met her but have spoken on the phone.

Probably sounds a little pathetic but I miss the pen pals that stopped writing because I moved in with my boyfriend - we wrote for about 4 years and just felt like we had a real friendship despite the distance. At least on my side it was real!

I had a German penpal when I was at school (it was compulsory, to make us practise our written German under "real" conditions) but it's not something I'd want to do now. My life's too damn boring, I'd be stuck for ideas to try and fill a sheet of paper. Also, I don't know if a typed letter would be acceptable - my hands are so arthritic now that writing by hand is both painful and illegible,
