Old Style Pen Pals

Options
Although stamps aren't cheap now!

I have been watching Frontier Life on DVD and in it they are excited to get letters and news from home. Got me thinking that it would be lovely to have an old style pen pal - you know handwritten letters with little life updates and simple daily things.

I guess it is the Autumn weather - I am imagining cosy evenings by the (fairy light and pine cone!) fire spending time writing letters with a hot chocolate waiting!

I do have a couple of pen pals and getting post is like a smile in the mail.

Does anyone else have pen pals?

Most of my friends either think I am crazy (but they think that about me anyway ....... ) or vaguely remember having a pen pal at school.

I had a Japenese Pen Pal at school and we carried on writing to each other into our 30's (20+years) we lost contact when she emigrated to the US. I still have most of here letters and some of the stunning gifts she sent, I returned the favour.

There is nothing like receiving a 'proper' letter thought the post - maybe I should try and find her again....

I used to run the pen pal club in my school days, many moons ago.

However next month I'm off to visit Holly in the USA again - we started writing in 1972 and I still have all her letters!

We first visited in 1976 and have seen one another on and off over the years and gone through all life's events together .

Do those clubs still exist where you can find penfriends?

I had many pen pals in the 1980's and loved writing and receiving letters. My Aussie pen pal has visited and seen us in England twice and even came to my wedding, we then visited her in Queensland as part of a 3 week holiday. We lost touch for a few years and she found me again recently on Facebook. Maybe I should suggest we go back to OS Penpal letters again, it wa exciting getting those airmail letters and posting each other small gifts.
  • I have never seen a pen pal club!

Some magazines have pen pal requests in them. I had a couple of old fashioned pen pals from an Amish magazine (they weren't Amish but interested in the culture like me) but they stopped writing after I moved in with my boyfriend as we aren't married.

I miss that excitement of getting a newsy letter! :) But I still have 3 people that I write to as well as a sponsor child in Indonesia. Nothing like seeing an envelope with familiar handwriting on it!

I'd like a penpal, how about one of you?

I have recently in the last few years started having pen pals again. I subscribe to a magazine called Rainbows.
I also do postcrossing and they have lots of people looking for penpals on there.
I love getting a letter or a postcard instead of a bill. Also it is nice to learn about different cultures and countries.

  • Have a pen pal in Australia since 1985, met once but have regular letters and some calls
  • Yes I have penpals. I started at school with the French class penpal exchange scheme - that didn't last due to no common interest but I still write to one of my penpals that I started writing to just after. I then developed some new penpals friends in the last 5 years or so. It's great to have friends all over with common interests and different experiences of life. It's also fab to receive a handwritten letter in the post :-)

I used to write to penpals in Germany when I was in my teens but we lost contact many years ago, and being girls I doubt if I could find them again online, as chances are they'll now have different surnames!

I wondered about Postcrossing, I would love to send and receive postcards but am wary of just giving out my address to people, iyswim!

I can't remember the last time i received a hand written letter.
The only thing the postman brings these days are brown envelopes with red bills inside.
