When the LA do a financial assessment, the family home should be disregarded while your dad is living there. She should get her AA while she is self-funding (check that you have claimed the higher amount). When her savings (ie savings in her name and half of any joint savings) have fallen below around £23K the LA should start paying some of the care home fees, but she will have to contribute all apart from about £25 per week of her pension and she will lose AA.
Have you checked whether the care home you are looking at will accept the LA rate? If not, she will need to move to one that does, or the family will need to pay a third-party top up, which could be several hundred pounds a week.
A couple of months of self-funding isn't long - you should talk to the LA as soon as possible to get into the system.0 -
Thank you for this extra info, much appreciated.0

Its worth having a look on the Alzheimer's Society forum even though it doesn't sound as if your mum has been diagnosed with dementia - most of the members have a lot of experience dealing with local authority funding and care homes so its a good place to find help.0
