Does the state pension stop if you go into hospital?

Options
Mum, aged 91 has been in hospital for a number of weeks now and will shortly be going into a care home. As well as her state pension she has an attendance allowance as she is so frail. Can anyone tell me if either of these will stop now while she's in hospital or later, when she goes into a home? She will be self funding for a couple of months and will then apply to the local authority to pay her care home fees. Dad aged 90 is still alive and living in the family home, if this makes any difference.

Attendance Allowance stops if the claimant is in hospital or a care home for 4 weeks or more.

  • Thank you too.
  • As has already been said, Attendance allowence will stop after 4 weeks in a care home. Although she may get funding for her care home cost, be aware, unless she suffers from Alzheimer's, there may well be a charge put on the family home for care home fees, payable on death of her husband / sale of home.
  • Thanks, we knew about that. Its a rented property so we should be ok there.

That's fine. I hope you manage to get it all sorted with the minimum amount of stress.

I believe you keep the attendance allowance whilst self funding in the care home. Once the LA pays for the care home then they give an amount of "spending money" and retain the state pension.
  • Thanks again :)

Correct. A relative has been receiving it for the 3 years she's been self funding in residential care.
