Installing a downstairs toilet

I have a bit of space under the stairs where I could install a toilet and a small sink. There is a window in the little room as well which makes it much more doable.

The main big pipe at the side of the house, from upstairs bathroom runs very close to this area also, would we be able to joint into that pipe, or what way would it work?

Also, we have had a nice wooden floor put down in the hall and in that area, presumably I will need to rip this up to allow access for installation?

Yes, you can normally connect into the existing stack however depending on how far away from the nearest manhole you are it may be better to have a separate run. Removing the floor depends where your incoming services will be from. The waste should go out through the wall

We have a manhole in the driveway, also very close to the large pipe outside.

By incoming services are you referring to the fresh water?

Yes, unless these need to come under then there should be no reason to have to lift it

  • Depending on where pipes run, your floor may be safe-ish.

Incoming would be water for the cistern & sink.
Outgoing would be water from the sink & to the sewage.

We were recommended an extractor fan (not unreasonably) and if I could rewire it now, I'd put a motion sensor to control the electric light... My lads do not remember to Switch Off when leaving.

Where would the water be taken from normally? Sorry I have no clue on this type of stuff haha.

Our kitchen is at the side and back of the house, if that is relevant at all.

As a general rule from the nearest hot and cold pipes to the area you want to install the toilet. If your looking and under stairs an educated guess, and it is a guess, would be that you have hot and cold running under your landing or that you would be able to get it there from an upstairs bathroom. Unless your kitchen backs on to the stairs in some way in which case that would probably be easier. Without seeing what's there nobody can say for certain.

Thanks, the kitchen does indeed back onto that area with hall and the small room under the stairs.
