Disabling/repairing a kitchen fan!!!

Hello all,

Years ago, before my house had central heating, an electric fan was installed in my kitchen to deal with a condensation problem on the windows throughout the house. There is an electrical fan unit at the outside wall of the kitchen, and a pipe which connects to the wall linking the kitchen to the hallway (to take moisture out from the middle of the house).

This fan hasn't been in operation (or needed to be in operation) for at least 15 years, but it has suddenly started up and it is incredibly loud!!! i find it really to ignore, and it is difficult to sleep through the noise. There is a switch on the wall to switch it off, but it is obviously not working. The fan has been going on and off every few seconds for the past week and it is driving me nuts!

Has anyone had this problem? Would a general electrician be able to fix this, and how much would it cost approximately?

I'd be really grateful for any advice!

It seems like it might be linked to a humidistat and that is why it is switching on and off. Is the switch definitely for that fan? Is it a Fused Switch like this? (It may or may not have a neon indicator) If so, just lever out the fuse holder and pull out the fuse. Sometimes there is a screw holding the fuse holder in. If that doesn't stop the fan, it wasn't that switch. Any competent electrician should be able to sort you out reasonable quickly.
