How safe are Mumbai and Pune?

Being sent there shortly for work, and I confess to being a bit apprehensive. Is it safe for women on their own?

There are vast numbers of Indian "career girls" who work there on their own, and most of whom are OK. If you dress and behave the way they do you should not have any major problems.

The only thing you are likely to suffer from is the slight discomfort of being more modestly dressed than you might prefer in the climate.

Take heed of advice from female colleagues, remain aware of the surroundings and situation, exude an air of confidence and avoid being too judgemental - there's a lot to get used to, but you'll be fine.

DH spends a lot of time working in that area, and the most dangerous bit is the expressway connecting Mumbai and Pune: Make sure your driver is very experienced and listen to music through headphones to distract you from all the weaving motorcycles, car horns and flashing hazard-warning lights!
