In my day we called it good parenting. :o
  • Depending on age/sense of child(ren), get them to text you.
My son, an unstabilised epileptic, has a bus pass & a mobile & texts to let us know he's arrived at college & is planning to get X bus back. So far, no problem (other than being an unstabilised epileptic).

Tracking folks is by gadget is technically a doddle, but a legal & ethical minefield. Loads simpler to use social networking so other parents communicate & the young pretty quickly realise. Love and trust take many forms, but wherever possible stay legal.

I wrote a little app (just for fun) that will plot in realtime the location of a device on a google map display.
The app hides on the phone so there is no worry of the child "soon finding how to disable it"

Ill gladly give you a copy to install, however you need some webspace for the interface

  • If it is an Android phone then using Tasker to send you a text when they connect to your home wi-fi would be the best solution.

It's more a "I just want to know you got home safely" than a "I want to know your every move"

RFIDs only work when they pass a scanner

Passive one's only work when they're 'excited'
    Active ones broadcast continuously

    Just saying :)

You may, however struggle with the range unless you tie it to a GPS chip for the location data and then back to something like a SIM card to 'call home'
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

    Is that for iOS ?
  • Frankly I think that buying them Tasker and setting them the challenge of getting it to automate message to you based on location or whatever, is going to be a far better way of keeping the trust, getting them interested and knowing where they are.

I would suspect that any tracking app is going to work for about as long as it takes you to first confront them on not being where they are supposed to be. And any suspicion is likely to lead to them "forgetting" to take their phone, meaning you have no way of contacting them at all.
  • Why not ask here and risk a squabbling cat fight over the morality of tracking your children ?

Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.
