Hi, first post here, after alot of searching I found my photographer from a listing on
www.photogra-free.com
There are lots of companies listed all over the UK, some free, some cheap and some expensive.
My photographer is self employed and not a member of an association, She said that the memberships had cost her extra money and hadnt given her or her customers anything so she 'stopped paying her membership to the club' cos she had to pass the onto her customers. She said what was better to show prospective clients a great portfolio or a bought qualification?
She also pointed out that all photographers have their own insurance, the 'clubs' are not regulated so can't and dont offer clients any suport if the worst were to happen.
HTH
In my previous post I refer to professional bodies not clubs, and anyone can insure themselves but not everyone does and against everything that cover is need for.
But the cost of being a member are not much and benefits out way the costs. And a professional body requires you to submit work to qualify, were as with a club anyone can join.. And a professional body requires you to be insured before you can call yourself a qualified member.0 -
Reading Sarah Jay's post it seemed like her photographer was referring to associations like the MPA or maybe the SWPP. Being able to confirm that your photographer has active indemnity policies, worst-case-scenario plans in place etc are important issues and should be explained in the contract but there are plenty of jobbing photogs who place no value in such bodies, and equally there are photographers that prominently advertise their membership.
For the prospective bride and groom a personal recommendation of quality and professionalism is perhaps more valuable than confirming membership of such bodies.0 -

I was really referring to the all photographers have insurance, not all have.
And the MPA you have to send them details of your insurance.
And yes word of mouth and recommendations are first rate, That is the main reasons I get a lot of my work and make sure you like the photographers style too.0
