Neither. look for something like a Skoda Fabia.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

    The only skoda fabia around me is a 2005 1.2 HTP 12v Ambiente 5dr 83k miles £1800
  • I have the same model of Fabia you have seen, really good car and much better built than the Fiat, I have owned Fiat's before and would not go back now I have owned the Fabia.

I would take it for a test drive and see what you think, not the quickest engine, but very reliable and easy to work on.

Also, have a look https://www.briskoda.com, great site for any information on Skoda's.

If you are still looking to buy one of these Puntos the first one sounds the better one. It has fewer and less serious faults. I too would expect a Fabia to be better, but only on average. You get good Puntos and bad Fabias.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

What would you say the serious faults are on the second car.
  • both Fiats are really easy to work on and very cheap to service, daughters have had both the 1.2 and the 1.4 GP, both proved to be very good buys 100% reliable unlike previous Renault / Citroen / Ford cars they owned.

Before I reply, I'll point out that I didn't say there were any serious faults with the second Punto, just that its faults were more serious than those on the first one.

The issues on the second car that I would be concerned about are:

    - oil around the engine suggests an oil leak
    - the corroding exhaust will cost a bit to fix if it has not been fixed
    - the non-opening door will have been fixed, but what caused it? Accident Damage, Water Ingress?
    - the deteriorated headlamp can be expensive if it gets bad enough to need replacing

The problem is that these MOT histories don't really confirm what has been repaired and what has not. MOT testing is still a bit variable, so just because an advisory isn't noted the following year, it doesn't mean that the item was repaired. For example, the distorted bead rims on the first Punto could have been fixed by replacing the wheels or just that the MOT station didn't notice them next time around. I'd expect they are still there and might indicate a high speed mounting of the kerb, I would check to see if the rims are damaged. I missed that particular point on my first review. I'm having second thoughts about the first Punto now.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

My Mark 1 Punto ELX is over 20 years old and still running well. It has cost hardly anything in all this time, beyond, brake and tyre replacements.

We also have a Mark3 Sporting which I like to drive, but I don't like the Grande models and find that they are rather cheapie , compared to earlier models.

You could take a Punt on any of them or buy a decent car instead (anything Japanese or Korean)
