USB sockets

I have just installed a double socket with USB connections. Very handy, I plan to add more. I have an electric recliner plugged into the wall sockets along with a lamp.

Up to now whenever I wanted to charge my phone etc I would unplug one and stick in the charger plug.

Now of course I can have a USB lead in the connector.

When the switches are off the USB connectors will still charge a phone or tablet....is it bad to keep a lead in the socket full time, if it's not connected to anything ? Just would be handier rather than fetching the lead every time I wanted to use it.

  • Provided that the lead is kept out of the way of things that may damage it, there is no reason why a lead can't be left in the wall socket.

Brilliant aren't they. I just put one in the bedroom to charge my phone. Couldn't believe how easy it was to fit. Planning on putting one in the lounge to free up a socket that my Hive (Central Heating) hub is currently taking power from.

Does it concern you that it is always effectively 'on' ?

I don't know if it heats up internally and can't cool ?

I have a couple of these and leave leads in all the time, haven't noticed them getting hot etc.. I think the OP is asking whether leaving the lead in means the usb transformer bit is then live, or is it only on when a gadget is plugged in to charge?

I'd be interested to know this too. I suspect, (for no valid professional reason) that the transformer is only live / activated when power is called for from a device though?

It depends on the socket some the transformer has no "power" until the little flap is moved others do ? You can argue it has no load or negligible based on resistance of cable/lead? Or primary winding power is there but not secondary most manufactures would advise remove when not in use trailing leads when not in use never a good idea....

Theres lots of grey areas in BS5733, BS1363-2 and IEC 61558-2-16 and EMC compatibility IEC 61000-6-1 and IEC 61000-6-3
  • MK ones are zero power consumption when nothing is connected to the USB. I'm not sure that cheapo ones would offer this though.
