Help: Surprise debt!

Options
Hi guys, I really need some help here, not sure what I can do.

I went to buy a new car today after lots of debate, I sat down to finally sort the paperwork to be hit with a big fat DECLINED, bad credit.

I have always been brilliant with money, I earn £50k a year and always pay my debts. I went away confused and upset, so I logged into experian to see what's going on.

It turns out when I cancelled my virgin media broadband a few years back and moved house there was £34 outstanding on the account. Obviously having moved I got no mail whatsoever even to my new address and no phone contact at all despite them having those details. My credit rating is absolutely ruined from a £34 debt now being passed to collectors after a year of non payment.

What are my.options here? I'm happy to pay what I owe but it doesn't seem that will undo the damage done?

Regards,
Matt

Call virgin media and explain the situation. Then write them, explaining the situation again and referencing the call, asking for them to remove the default from your credit file as a gesture of good will. They don't have to do it, and they are in the right to report the default, so the best you can do is ask nicely, and explain the whole situation, most likely many times to many people.

If they won't agree, then it's tough lesson about setting up royal mail redirect when moving houses in the future. In that case, the silver lining is that the default is small, and you will pay it in full, so as years pass it should bear little impact.
  • Why is it obvious you did not receive any mail sent to your old address? most people would have had it forwarded for six months
  • I got other mail but nothing from them, really quite taken aback and confused!
