I put on a lot of weight due to stress, and looking after others, and not having the time or energy left to look after myself.

Looking back, I think I may have been depressed.

I also do suffer from a few chronic conditions including IBS and Scoliosis - however, when I am eating well and exercising more, I do feel a lot better.

Anyway, with my BMI now at near 35 (Which was 37 a few weeks ago!) I am really trying to change my habits.

However, despite my weight, I am relatively fit, I walk regularly and do a few activities etc.

It's not easy though, I slipped up today and had a chocolate bar.

I do actually believe it is mainly as simple as eating well and exercise, but its having the mental motivation to do its that is hard.

I have personal reasons for now getting serious about it, and desperately want to get my BMI under 30 as soon as possible.

I managed to lose 3 stone before, and hoping to do it again.

I am on a 10,000 step a day challenge, I am trying to eat only non processed foods.

There used to be a weightloss section on this board, where there was a weekly weigh in etc, which helped me before, but I can't find it now - other than a slimming world one.

One chocolate bar is fine don't worry so you used 200 calories or so. So just use 200 less somewhere else.

I smashed out 1500 calories in one of those 4 packs of cookies in 10mins at the weekend. No problem I just reduce calories elsewhere. The key is not making it a regular thing. You have to plan in treats for yourself otherwise you won't make it!

I tend to have sunday as cheat meal day so I normally just eat protein throughout the day and save my calories for whatever I fancy that meal.

  • Something does not add up about your description of yourself and what you do. A severely obese competitive figure skater??

This overweight woman is exactly the same height as you, but 2 stone lighter!!

Well, it is true. I'm a size 16 as it happens. I have huge leg muscles too and I understand that muscle weight more than fat.

Before I started skating again 3 years ago, I was the same weight but a size 20. My weight has not gone done, but I'm down 2 clothes sizes.
  • The thought of an overweight skater is a bit alarming, but Jane torvill was not very thin either.

    Why? In what way?
  • This just proves that no matter what you do, in some small minded people's eyes, you can never be right.

Devilsadvocate is obviously fit and strong, and healthy too, I would imagine if able to do so much exercise. So what if the chuffing BMI chart says she overweight??? BMI is a load of codswallop, anyway.

    When I was fit and healthy and swam 6 times a week, I was 12.5 stone and a size 12 @ 5' 5".

It wasn't a BMI number that was mentioned - she said she's 5 foot 2 and weighs 13 stone!!

12 and a half stone at 5 foot 5 is also pretty heavy, but people are much bigger these days.

You look at tv footage of the general public in the 60s and 70s - that's a normal weight and size. Overweight has become the norm now.

    How narrowminded.

Overweight by whose standards??? The diet industry??? The BMI person whose chart was never intended to be used as an indicator of health.

Devilsadvocate could be pure muscle. I was pretty muscular when I swam. So I may have been 'heavy', as you put it, but I wasn't fat. In addition, the only reason a lot of my clothes were a size 12 was because of my big (bony) hips and my big boobs.

Stop trying to make people feel bad.
