travel insurance - existing medical condition.

I am looking for travel insurance, but have an existing medical condition - a very bad back problem that may well need an op in the next few weeks. I am looking at the hsbc bank account plus - after quidco cashback and 1st 6 months 1/2 price, the annual cost for the 1st year works out at £91.46. Does anybody know roughly if the likely costs of mine and my wife's cover (she has no medical condition) would be more than this - it's impossible to get an online quote for existing conditions to find out.

Quick suggestion try the search box at the top of the forum and put "medical condition" into and see what you get out.

To answer your question:
If you have a medical condition like with any insurance policy you will find you will have to ring up the insurer to see if they will cover you. All online quotes in insurance are for people who don't deviate from average, in your case this means they don't have pre-existing conditions.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

I've just got insurance from Llloyds covering loads of conditions, but they only seem to take account of what current conditions are and if you're taking medication

I took out an annual policy last month and was asked whether I had any conditions that may require hospital treatment within the life of the policy. I was also asked the usual questions about pre existing conditions, whether I had been to the doctor or hospital in the past 12 months and if so what for, amd what medication, including regular painkillers was I taking.
I had to declare my coeliac disease but luckily this was not deemed to be worthy of increased premiums, I was warned though that any treatment I required that had anything to do with this would not be covered.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. As you are already aware you may need an op, chances are they will exclude any claim relating to your back or relevant associated problem. Also, depending on your age (yes ageism) then any additional premiums/exclusions may vary as the risk will also vary. Plus "bad back" problem is very vague and covers many thnigs, so before you contct your insurer be very clear about which medical problem you are disclosing as being specific rules out other risks which may reduce the cost of any additional charges the insurer wishes to impose.Sorry but please keep your signature to 4 lines in length - MSE Forum Team 20 -
Slightly seperate issue but I have just got an Annual Policy to cover myself and my wife (both in our thirties) to cover the very mild condition that I have - Mild Prolapsed Mitral Valve. I went with Columbus Direct in the end. I would not even know about this condition it if it hadn't been discovered during a routine examination about 8 years ago but now I feel I should disclose it to avoid invalidating the claim.
I approached Halifax as their website referred to accepting some pre existing conditions but an annual policy worldwide including USA went from £62 online to £147 to cover this mild condition. This seemed excessive as I have life insurance with no additional premium to cover this condition because they see it as a low risk.
I went via Medici Travel who have said £110- but their cover is lower than most others - only £3000- cancellation and 31 days maximum.
MIA Online started at £106- before going through any medical assessment so I didn't go through all of that.
I then spoke to Columbus Direct who quoted £88- for the cover including £5000- cancellation and up to £60- worldwide.
I know it's more than the cheapest around but now I know that my mild condition is definitely covered - though I don't suppose that'll make claiming any easier if I have too!
I outline the above because I have found all insurance very frustrating for this condition of a Mild Prolapsed Mitral Valve which as I understand many people live with without even knowing about it so hope this may assist someone.0 -
I have always used marks and spencers, an annual policy inc usa is £106 only for hubby and myself...
With any policy where you want pre existing condition cover you will have to call them and tell of your pre existing condition,. Just make sure you check their conditions as some will cover you but NOT for the pre exis. condition, which if you are out of europe could prove costly if medical assistance needed.
why don't you call all insurers with freephone numbers and get quotes..0 -
I spent hours on this, with a previous heart attack and diabetes to cover as a 68 year old. Easily best was www.covermytravels.co.uk which gave me an annual policy for £138.
Many companies would not give annual policies at all and many quoted single trip premiums much higher than the annual policy mentioned above.
This company will take on many conditions others exclude provided they have been stable for 12 months and will also consider others on their merits. The website has a list of conditions you do not need to declare at all, for others you phone them.0
