Email not coming into Outlook

Options
Can anyone help please?

About a week ago my emails stopped coming into Outlook but can be read and managed via the Yahoo website. What has happened?

I have a btinternet.com email address and am now on Virgin broadband.

Also, is it possible to have my hotmail emails brought into Outlook or can I have a second address through Virgin?

Can someone talk me through sorting this out in very simple terms as I am a complete numpty?

Thanks in advance...........

If you no longer pay BT for internet access then your account is closed. With VM you can set multiple email accounts up against the main BB account. It's on the VM site customer support area how to do it.

Thanks for your reply......... I ceased paying for BT dial up 12 months ago and was told I could keep the address whilst I moved house. I worked on Yahoo webpage for 3mths whilst lodging and then went onto NTL/Virgin 9mths ago. All worked fine, emails coming into Outlook, until approx a week ago.

I am still using the btinternet address via Yahoo with no probs at all, it just isn't coming through to Outlook.

Re the second address, I'll check out the Virgin site. Thanks again.

In Outlook, Tool, Email accounts, View/change existing account, Change ... the smtp server needs to be the one that Virgin specify. Something like smtp.virgin.net

This is the server that sends email - you can only connect to the sending server if you are a customer (which you are - but you cannot send via the btinternet server).

The receiving server for your BT email address needs to be something like mail.btinternet.com.

Check the correct configuration on the support pages for BT and Virgin.

If you want a Virgin email address, you'll need to set up a new email account in Outlook to receive that email - both sending and receiving servers should be the ones that Virgin specify.

Not sure about Hotmail - at one point, getting Hotmail into Outlook was a "premium" service that you had to pay for. But Microsoft have step by step details.

You will then end up with three email accounts in Outlook - BT address, Virgin address and Hotmail address.

You should have received a warning that your account will close if not accessed. They can be kept alive by accessing via a dial-up connection every couple of months.

  • I stopped using BT more than 5 years ago and still receive email on that address.

The receiving is not an issue - it's just that you can only send via the BT server if you're a paying customer.

You no longer pay for the account access so it is unlikely it is still live now. My friends account closed without warning recently, she had been with SkyBB for about 4 months before it finally closed though.
You cannot access hotmail through Outlook etc without paying for it anymore, you can access VM etc through Outlook.
You asked about a second account at VM, do you mean you want to have a second email address from them? If so the instructions are in my email, I think there are also instructions on the site that you can follow to add the accounts to Outlook/ Outlook Express etc.

Thanks again every one........... bizarre things are still happening though.

Went into Tools, Change Email Accounts and changed outgoing server to Virgin. Clicked on Send/Receive in Outlook and all the emails sitting on Yahoo came into Outlook but I got an error message regarding sending.........

Out of interest I changed the outgoing server back to btinternet.com and sent myself an email and it came through quite happily.........

    I'll quit whilst I'm ahead I think!

BT might be a little slow in closing your access to the smtp server. Keep an eye on it as you may need to change it to Virgin the future.

  • I changed my ISP from Bt Internet about 6 months ago - I got this e-mail from BT couple of weeks ago:

Changed your Internet Service Provider (ISP)?
If you've changed your ISP but want to keep your BT Openworld or BT Internet email address, our Premium Mail package may be helpful. For just £1.50 a month³, you gain:
    • POP3/SMTP access for up to five email accounts
    • 2GB of storage space for the primary account (1GB for additional accounts)
    • more space for attachments so you can send and receive files of up to 10MB
    • increased protection with an advanced spam filter
    • enhanced functionality from BT Yahoo!'s new webmail interface
I only exist in my own mind - if you can see, hear or read me, you are a product of my imagination.
  • Am with Virgin also and have had troubles withOutlook Email. Unplug the power cable from your Virgin broadband surfboard, wait 10 minutes and plug back on again. Reboot your computer in meantime. Should work.
