...just try and stay somewhere north of Market street to avoid the down and outs camped out on the streets.0

I agree, stay somewhere around the Pier area, when i was in SF a few years ago, we stayed at a Travelodge just off the centre. I decided to go for a walk on the night time-big mistake, there were gangs roaming about, plus the down and outs.
we moved to the Pier area the next night and it was totally safe.Filiss0 -
We stayed at Fishermans Wharf last May the Argonaut Hotel, IMHO is the very best hotel I have stayed in, ever!
It cost about £115/night booked in advance using opodo,it was well worth it!

Earlier this year we used hotwire.com and ended up with a three day stay at the 4 star Mark Hopkins Intercontinental on top of Nob Hill for just over £65 inc tax, definitely recommended.0

Try the Pickwick just off 4th, was really nice and great value (I was backpacking, just walked in, got a great price).

I always look on www.tripadvisor.co.uk before booking anywhere to stay as the reviews have always been spot on. I'm going to SF myself in Dec and have narrowed it down to the following:
Travelodge by the Bay
Holiday Inn Fishermans Wharf (ask to be in main building not the annex)
Castle Inn, Broadway
Royal Pacific Motor Inn
Columbus Motor Inn
All of the above are in walking distance to the Wharf, close to public transport, in good areas and not too expensive. Hotels.com had Travelodge by the Bay for just £40 per room per night yesterday.
Hope this is useful0
