Fraudulent / erroneous charges on Amex statement

Hi everyone,

I logged in to my Amex app today to check my balance and was horrified to see a £1600 charge from Sixt rent a car in Chesterfield (never been there in my life). Naturally I call Amex straight away and dispute the charge / cancel the card and order replacement.

Then when I check again tonight, I see another charge as pending (doesn't say the amount) which after calling Amex again is for £2400 made on 21st September  however apparently I am not allowed to dispute this until it becomes a debit ie is no longer pending.

Does anyone have any experience in how likely I am to not have to foot this bill?! It's really panicked me given I bought a flat recently so money is obviously tighter than I am used to. I'm not sure what sort of evidence I would need to provide? all my other charges within those days are in London so hopefully that will help.

Also, do you think it would be helpful to call this car rental place to make sure they don't take any transactions in my name, or will this interfere with Amex's own investigation?

So not needed right now!

  • It'll be fine. Don't go calling the car place. It will just cause confusion.
  • I wouldn't worry about it. Once the next transaction posts, they'll just dispute it and freeze it as well. As it will be either a card not present transaction or a magstripe transaction, the retailer will be liable and they'll just have the money taken off them.

I wouldn't contact the retailer as its usually against the card terms and conditions to contact the retailer after a dispute.
  • You are kind of lucky that this fraud transactions occurred on your amex card as they are one the best to deal with these types of things. As soon the pending transaction becomes payable they will remove it from the transactions.

If the fraud however, was on the natwest cards, then it might have been a different story altogether
