do the phrases pig in a poke and caveat emptor mean anything to you?

Take some responsibility for looking at what you're buying before your hand over the money!
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

The government doesn't build new homes. Developers build new homes. If people stopped buying houses from developers who produced a bad product the developers would go out of business. People who buy a new home already have protection. It is called a survey. Just because a home is new doesn't mean that it is a good idea not to have it surveyed. You can also employ someone to do a snagging list for you. The general assumption is that if you are capable of buying a home you are also capable of looking at what you are buying and having it checked and then if you are not satisfied to not buy it.

If new homes are so bad wouldn't it be a better idea to buy an older one rather making useless petitions.

Thank you for the link. I did not realise the reviews you have referenced existed.
As someone who has bought a new home, which turned out to have numerous issues, despite a survey, I agree with you and have signed.
I am still in conflict with our developer and they continue to treat us appallingly: they seem to think if they condescend enough we'll just forget about the issues. It would be good to have legislation to even up, a little, the powers games they like to play.

I think this is caused by the educational ideal of "no one is allowed to fail" and no one is allowed to "tell someone that they are not good at something." This leads people to think that someone else is responsible for anything that goes wrong in their lives because they themselves cannot fail at anything. It seems to have led to a sort of entitlement.

So if someone doesn't check the reviews of a particular builder or site before they buy then somehow this becomes the fault of the government. It doesn't become their fault for making a mistake or failing.

Crikey, teachers might be blamed for many things, but people's failure to adequately assess a house is a new one on me!

The National Curriculum came into being around 1989 and SATs tests followed in 1991, since when children have been tested regularly and awarded grades, which they are made fully aware of from 11 years onwards.

Indeed, many feel that the testing regime is limiting the curriculum now, but like it or not, it's there.

There is no pass & fail as in the old days of the 11 plus, but everyone knows the grades that represent poor achievement.

I think you may be referring to a brief period in the 1970s; ancient history in this context.

As someone that provides infrastructure to these developers i'm telling you now standards will not improve.

The things i see are shocking and a whole cultural change would be needed. And shorts and bare tops banned!

For example, the other day they were digging around the main fuel feed to Heathrow and Gatwick. I spent 12 months negotiating the do's and don'ts regarding this. They just carried on.

I wouldn't buy a new build if you paid me. 4 different developers in the last year and not one of them has impressed me. Build quality is dire. Whilst harsh i'd say you're a muppet if you buy a new build. Sorry but it's true.

The population is increasing so we need more homes built. It's all well and good saying buy an older property but due to supply and demand someone will end up having to buy a new build. Not all new builds are created equally. Some, particularly from the smaller builders and developments are good quality but they tend to cost a bit more. It's the squeeze 'em in and stack 'em high ones that tend to be built to meet the bare minimum of building standards and even then not always. If you're really unfortunate you could end up like these poor folk in Wishaw, unable to flush a toilet or use the washing machine whilst the whole estate stinks of raw sewage.
