If you do an application online, I imagine it is non advised. As soon as there is any human contact in relation to your application it has to be come an advised process and so thats why Virgin are pretty limited in helping.
I have examples myself where the client has gone in branch and the banks own employee has applied and been declined. I have applied ot the same lender and been accepted. I think the trick is to know how to make the system work for you. There are questions which can be answered in multiple ways, none of which are wrong and so doing it correctly can give your application those extra few points to get you what you need.
