Collections Debt - Written Off

My partner had an old Barclays joint account with her ex, which lapsed when they moved back to Australia in 2011. This was then passed onto a collections agency later that year, as it they were out of the country and didn't get any of the notifications from Barclays and subsequent letters from the collections agency. Now that she is back in the UK, and we have worked out the collections letters are genuine and that the account they were referring to wasn't in fact closed properly back in 2011, we wanted to pay-off the settlement amount they were offering. However, when we phoned this morning, the collections agency mentioned the account had been written off. We are trying to buy a house together and worried this default account will affect our credit rating and ability to secure a mortgage. Any advice on getting this off her credit report now that the debt has been written-off? Many thanks in advance...
