Tesco value vs aldi

Options
An aldi has opened near us. We don't buy branded products normally and use tesco value spaghetti, beans etc. Would shopping ah aldi save us anything?

Give it a try, even if you just buy a few items but make a note of what you would normally buy.

Aldi (and Lidl) prices for their own-brand products tend to be around the same sort of level as major supermarket value lines.

But the quality is far higher - it's on a par with the main brands and the major supermarket standard own brands. In some cases (imported charcuterie, for example) it's often on a par with their premium own brands.

Very very rarely have we ever found an Aldi product to be in any way inferior to the main brand, and the price will be about a third less. Frequently it will come from the same factory, to a very similar specification. Dorset Cereals, for example, make Lidl's muesli, and Aldi's lowest priced butter comes from the same creamery that supplies Country Life.

You'll find odd brand names that you don't recognise, by the way - they're almost always just names used by Aldi and Lidl for their own brands because new customers haven't in the past had sufficient confidence in the names of the stores. Those days are quickly passing, though, as more and more people discover the quality, and I imagine that before long everything will be Aldi or Lidl branded.

    Good luck - I think you're in for a pleasant surprise. :)

I buy Tesco Value and the same products from Aldi. Tesco value taste the same and the same price as Aldi. I would buy from Tesco value as I get points on my card.

    Too true, so very tasty..

  • Aldi every time for me - the taste and quality is much higher than Tesco value.

Also, try Aldi for things like cooked meats. It's £1.45 for thirteen slices of ham. They're a decent size, and generally very lean. It's so much cheaper than Tesco. I do the bulk of my shopping in Aldi now.
  • The comparison between aldi brands would be to tesco own brand, not tesco value.

Aldi do very few 'value' brand comparisons, i.e. baked beans and cookies being two examples.

Is it just me or have Tesco stopped stocking some of their 'basic' products ?

No not just you, other posters have noticed the same and I believe its so they can improve the Tesco own brand foods but could be wrong.
