Phil, I think you will need to harden your bones a bit in the workplace. Whether you are re-appointed or not, don't lose heart. The job you are doing now is all experience that you can add to a CV.
Just make sure you don't whinge about this at work, you will end up looking like a lemon - or was it a grape? :think:Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -

Q, to be honest I have seen so many new opportunties to things I never knew existed before I started this job that I find it hard to know which one attack and go down as there are not enough hours in a day to do them all.
Maybe I do need to be tougher but I do really like my job.:beer:0 -

Then you have to do as good a job as you are capable of and LOOK eager to DO and help. At the very least you would get glowing references for your next placement, which is always an excellent thing to have.
Now I wonder what bibliophil has to say on this one.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -

So assuming the cover person fails to be reemployed for the post through open application are they then given notice when the new permanent post holder is appointed?Signature removed for peace of mind0

Phil, it does depend what your contract says. If your contract says you have a 12 month post, then that is basically what you have and they will probably try to keep you if you are doing OK. How long is your notice period? (Just looking on the worst case scenario side).
On the positive side, you are right that you now have office experience, and presumably you have access to internal newsletters about internal vacancies. Even if you are not successful in applying for 'your' job, you are right that there will be other opportunities around. GOOD LUCK and I look forward to hearing that you have broadened your experience even further, either by getting a permanent contract where you are now, or by getting another, even better, job.Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0 -
I'd say see the 'grapevine' warning as a chance for you to make sure you are the ideal employee.
If you think about it, they may have to advertise the post legally but why would they take one someone else if they already have a very good employee in the post? They simply won't want the bother of training someone else and then they have the worry over whether they will fit in and be reliable etc etc.
As someone else has already said, dont talk about this at work, just do your job to the very best of your abilities and you shouldn't have a lot to worry about imo.0 -

My contract is fixed term rather than fixed task so I might well have to be kept the complete life of the contract, but I really am not sure if that is the case or if I could just get a month's paid notice and paid for any untaken holiday. Whilst I am have high targets for myself I really don't know if a few months experience really gives me the ability to apply for a better job. You are recommended to aim for promotion every 2 to 5 years to every 2 to 5 months.:beer:0 -

Logically it makes no sense to train someone else but it is possible that they could do something like that. I do try to be the best person they have ever had for the job and I am trying all the time to take on new skills and to do new tasks.:beer:0 -
I made a list last night of all the new skills I have got so far in my job.
Health and Safety training, fire training, filing, record keeping, diary management, stock control, mail, databases, excel, data protection and customer care.:beer:0
